Using the Search Box

The search box you find on various pages on the site searches the listings for the EXACT PHRASE you enter into the search box. You can also use operators like OR, AND or NOT to control the results you receive. Also note the tips and special operators below. (The Free Text Advanced Search also uses these rules.)

Tips for the Free Text Search
1)Phrases separated with spaces are searched as is: searching for brand new returns brand new disc but not new brand. (Note: searching for brand new returns the same results as "brand new".)
2)Enclose operators in double quotation marks if you want to include them in your Search : rock "and" roll returns rock and roll.
3)Use OR to expand your Search. You will get results that contain at least one of your Search terms: a Search for tom OR cruise returns tom hanks and cruise ship.
4)Use AND to narrow your Search. You will only get results that contain all of your Search terms: a Search for pumpkin AND pie will return holiday pumpkin pie but not holiday pie.
5)Use NOT to exclude terms from your Search: Search for walkman NOT Sony to find Aiwa walkman.
6)Only 10 words or less are allowed in your Search Query.

Other ways to focus your search:

Term Example Use
* for* Wildcard for one or more characters. Finds for, fork, and fortify.
? forg?t Wildcard for one character. Finds forget and forgot.
\ Joe\'s Place Use to search for phrases containing any of the following marks: , ( ) [ = > < ! ‘ < @ `  {  Finds Joe's Place.
<TYPO> <TYPO> receive Finds words with up to two differences (additions, deletions, transpositions) from your term. Finds both receive and recieve.
<Near> publishing <Near> house Finds words close to each other (the closer they are, the higher they appear in the results).
<Sentence> dog <Sentence> food Finds words in the same sentence.
<Paragraph> Madrid <Paragraph> Spain Finds words in same paragraph.

Using the Advanced Search Page:  [Top]
There are several ways to use Advanced Search. The default search is the General Keyword Search, but you can also search by Category, Seller, Location, or Listing Number. You can also use operators and other advanced techniques in the Free Text Search. Details on each search are below:
1)General Keyword Search. The centerpiece of this search is the ability to set parameters around how to search for your keywords: use all the words, any of them, exact phrase, should anything be excluded. (This search works without operators - to use words like "AND" and "NOT", use the Free Text Search.) You can also narrow your search by specifying end date, a price range, or listing type. A full explanation of the fields can be found below.
2)Search by Category. Select a category that interests you and use the keyword, price and type fields to limit your search. You can also choose to search with specifications. If you click the box that says "Search including Product Specifiations," you will be brought to a page with category-specific attributes to help you narrow your Search. For Example, by selecting Computers, the Search areas Manufacturer, Mfg Part No, and Condition are added to the page.
3)Search for a Seller. You can Search for listings from a particular seller (using the username or number) or from sellers in your state. The search can then be limited by keyword, price, and listing type.
4)Free Text/Listing Number. These simpler searches have been combined onto one page. The Free Text search allows you to use operators and searches on the exact string you enter. See the operators section for more explanation. The Listing Number search allows you to pull up any listing by entering its Listing Number in the search field.
5)Search by Area. Use Location Search to find items being sold by sellers near you. Enter your zip code/postal code and your desired distance and the search will return items sold by sellers registered within the specified area. This can be useful if you're looking for difficult-to-ship items.

SEARCH FIELDS ON ADVANCED SEARCH PAGE [Top]

Keyword searches for specific words wither in the Listing Title or the Description that accompanies each listing.

End Date allows you to find a listing that ends on or near a given date. Enter the date range as MM/DD/YY and the results will be restricted to listings closing between the given dates.

Include Closed Listings must be checked if you have entered a date range in the past and want to see closed listings. You can see listings up to 7 days old.

Current Price allows you to enter a desired price. For example if you are looking for an item in between $100.00 and $150.00 enter these two figures into the provided fields, and the search will weed out those listings that do not meet your price requirements.

Reserve Price lets you choose whether or not to include Reserve Price auctions in your search results.

Seller Type allows you to limit your search to items sold only by Merchants or by private parties.

Listing Type allows you to specify what kind of listings you would like to view when your search results are returned.

Bids refers to listings that have higher than normal bidding activity.

Photo returns only listings that have photos attached.

Sort by allows you to control how listings are sorted. "Relevance" brings up listings based on the occurrence of your keywords(s). You can also sort by Bids, End date, or Price.

Category will populate the Advanced Search page with a list of specific item attributes based on the Category that you have chosen. For example, if the Category you select is Computers, the search areas Manufacturer, Mfg Part No, and Condition are added to the Advanced Search page to help you narrow your Search.

Product Specifications can be searched if you choose a category in the Category Search. You will be sent to a page with a list of specific item attributes based on the category that you have chosen. For example, if the Category you select is Computers, the search areas Manufacturer, Mfg Part No, and Condition are added to the Advanced Search page to help you narrow your Search.

Seller Username allows you to find listings listed by a seller with a particular username on the site (though be aware usernames are not necessarily unique).

Seller Number allows you to search for the listings of a seller with a particular Customer Number. This number uniquely identifies a seller and can be found in the "View all listings from this seller" search url or the url of their ratings page.

Seller Rating allows you to Search for Users that have only positive feedback ratings. If this option is not selected, all Users with listings fitting your requirements will be shown.

Seller Location allows you to specify the State from which you would like to view the listings. For example, if you choose Virginia from this drop down menu, only Listings from Virginia will appear in the Search results.
