I Wanna Be A Rockstar

by Chank Diesel
March 25, 1997

It's not all that hard to become a rockstar. You don't need to know how to play a musical instrument. And you don't need to know how to sing. You just have to determine that you WANT to be a rockstar.

If you have a little talent, that'll help you on the road to rockstardom. If you have a lot of talent, things are a bit more complicated. You can still become a rockstar, but you'll probably die at age 27.

Extremely talented individuals who have become rockstars and died at age 27 include Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix and the Big Bopper. Less talented rockstars who have lived past their 28th birthday include Marilyn Manson, Dave Pirner and Ringo Starr. And all three Beastie Boys.

Fame has nothing to do with rockstardom. That guy from Better Than Ezra is not a rockstar, but my roommate Heidi is, and she hasn't even put out her first single. She's just convinced herself that she's a rockstar. That's all it takes.

Nicole Blackman is a rockstar, too. She's got a great record out to prove it. Nicole wrote the lyrics and sings on "Dead Inside", the new release from the Golden Palominos. "Dead Inside" is a record so charmingly disturbing it was chosen by rockstar Marilyn Manson as a Christmas gift to give to his friends.

The Golden Palominos record is not Nicole's first appearance in the public arena. Anton Fier, chief orchestrator of the Palominos became familiar with Nicole as a fancy pants NEW YORK CITY Spoken Word Artist. Kinda like Maggie Estep. Except without the silicon lip implants.

Although Blackman and Estep both hail from New York City, and both have travelled from spoken word performances and then on to the rockstar arena, Blackman doesn't see much similarity between herself and Estep. "Look at her book, then look at my poetry," says Blackman, "the difference is like apples and battleships." Besides, Maggie Estep is so 1995. Nicole Blackman is 1997.

That's why I've chosen Nicole as the featured artist of my first Official ChankBrand Rockstar Font(tm). Blackman is the granddaughter of Harry Volk, founder of the Volk Clip Art Company, pioneers in the clip art industry. Her beloved grandfather Volk was a big influence on Nicole's artistic development, so it should be no surprise that she has a pretty good understanding and appreciation of the print aesthetic. When I asked for a rockstar font submission I found out Nicole can draw a pretty mean alphabet.

So here's a new free font. Darling Nikki was drawn by Nicole Blackman and then converted to font format by me, using my patented Alphabetician's Soopersecret Fontmaking Technique(tm)...

Enjoy this font and use it often.
