Straight Out Of Gif Girl's Closet
Web Design Book Resources

If you're looking for a column on the blink tag, you apparently didn't get the joke...

Anyway, this week, Gif Girl would like to invite you into her closet... of Web resources, that is. There are so many "resources" out there about Web design that sometimes it's hard to cut through all the clutter. Gif Girl is here to help! For the next couple of weeks, we will be looking at some of the best magazines, books, and Web sites around that will help you sharpen your Web design knowledge and skills. These lists are by no means exhaustive...Gif Girl has so many books on the Web and design that she could never list them all at once... but these are some of her favs!

Web Design Books

Elements of Web Design
Darcy DiNucci with Maria Giudice & Lynn Stiles
1997 Peach Pit Press US$39.95

This book gives an excellent overview of the whole Web design process... from information architecting, to HTML programming, to graphics creation. It also explains different techniques for adding interactivity into your pages through forms, cgi-scripts, and other beyond-the-browser technologies. It also gives you real world case studies throughout the book of Web sites that can serve as great examples of excellent Web design.

The Non-Designer's Design Book
Robin Williams
1994 Peach Pit Press US$14.95

OK, you're making your personal homepages, and you're no Leonardo DiVinci. But Gif Girl doesn't accept that as an excuse for bad design. This book helps non-professional designers understand the basic principles behind design so that their work can look more professional, more attractive, and also be more functional. Williams also has excellent explanations for the basic tenants of typography, which as you Gif Girl groupies know is one of her favorite subjects. Plus, it's only 15 bucks...what are you waiting for?

Teach Yourself Web Publishing with HTML 3.2 In A Week
Laura LeMay
1996 Sams.net Publishing US$29.95

Wait a minute, Gif Girl, I thought this was about design, not code! Well, friends, Gif Girl is no hacker, but she knows that without a working knowledge of HTML, your Web design will languish in not-so-neat-and-tidiness. What she means to say is, you need to know the code to create tight, well-designed interfaces, and to take advantage of all that HTML has to offer. So suck it up and read Laura LeMay's excellent intro to HTML. She is also releasing updates of this book, so just look for the most recent one on bookstore shelves.

Designing Web Graphics &
Coloring Web Graphics

Lynda Weinman
both, 1996 New Riders US$50.00/each

OK, you've already heard Gif Girl talk about Lynda Weinman and how she is the patron saint of Web graphics. Her first book, Designing Web Graphics, is a great introduction for not-so-advanced Web designers. Coloring Web Graphics is a great resources for beginners and more experienced Web designers alike, with lots of tips of processing graphics and optimizing color for the Web. Anyone who deals with the color/graphics side of Web design should give it a gander.
