The Adventures of Girl Girl

March 18, 1999
Making and Saving Money:
setting up shop

Here's the scenario: You have a page that you lovingly designed on a subject that you are passionate about; say it's your homeland of Tennessee, for instance (it just so happens that Gif Girl herself hails from that glorious state!). You've written a great treatise on why you love the Volunteer State, found some great links to other Web sites about Tennessee, and are pleased as punch with yourself. So, what now?

How about choosing your favorite books about Tennessee? Maybe you could mention some great novels or plays that take place there or were written by famous Tennesseans. And can we talk about music? So much great music comes out of Tennessee that it would be a crime not to feature it on your page!

Now imagine not only adding in all those great links, but actually making money off it to boot! That's right. You can make money when people click on those links and buy books or music through your site. Plus, it's easy as pie to do. Just check out these great affiliate programs offered by Tripod:

  • Barnesandnoble.com: Books, software and magazines
  • CDNOW: Music and videos
  • Chipshot.com: Sporting goods and golfing equipment
  • ENews.com: Magazine subscriptions
You can place content-oriented links — to your favorite authors at barnesandnoble.com, for instance. Alternately, you can simply add a general text link, graphic link, or search box and link it to the appropriate commerce site; for example, "Buy Books at Barnesandnoble.com." When visitors to your site click through and buy something, you earn commission. You'll receive a percentage of sales that result from a referral from your Web site. Commission rates usually range from 5% to 50%, depending on the company and product.

When Gif Girl isn't out saving the world from dithered graphics and illegible Web pages, she helps keep Tripod's pages running fast and furious.

Send Gif Girl your comments, ideas, suggestions, and — of course — your solutions for saving the world from bad Web page design. She'd love to hear from you.
