Yes- it's a joke - you aren't really playing against Tripod staff over the Internet. That would probably be too slow.
But we HAVE created artificial intelligence programs that SIMULATE various members of the Tripod staff, and put them into PINGMASTER 2000. If they do well enough at PINGMASTER, they'll probably take over the staff members' other duties eventually. (And in the future we'll all eat food pills and ride around with jetpacks too, doncha know...)
Now get back to PINGMASTER!
