THRIFTING FOR THE MASSES
by Al Hoff |

I've spent my life buying used wares, sometimes due to the state of my checking account. But if I crashed into a trust fund tomorrow, I'd still shop secondhand. Nearly everything you need for easy living is out there already. What might you find today? Who knows?
At least you won't be limited to the same soulless mega-mall schlock. And,
unless you can cough up some serious cash, new merch is often of poor quality, designed to be disposable. I say: Don't fall for that new pressboard desk. Go get a solid, old wood or metal one instead.

Advertising sets the agenda for retail shopping, but there are fewer such rules in the secondhand world. Out of a gazillion random used items, you must use your imagination to furnish your life. I relish the fact that my pad looks like nobody else's, filled with odd and unique items, each with their own mysterious past lives, now being re-used and re-loved by me.
Save those functional items from eco-miserable landfills! It's an
exhilarating act of consumer rebellion not to buy this year's model.
Where should your treasure hunt commence? Well, that depends. Like to sleep in? Love the rush of competition? Have less than $5? Here's a short guide to help you find your way.
