IS SOMETHING BROKEN, leaking, or shabby-looking in your house? Found a weird stain on your carpet and don't know how to remove it? Want to know whether you should buy an electric drill? Ask our panel of Handy Girls. We'll forward each question to the Handy Girl most qualified to answer, and publish the answers right here. First, check out the questions they've answered so far. If you don't find an answer there, ask away!

Ask the Handy Girls

By the way, this service is for Tripod members only — but you can become a member, for free and in thirty seconds, right here.

First, meet the six Handy Girls:

Janet Daly
Janet used to be the Production Manager at Tripod, but once she taught us everything she knew, from removing stains to how to cook perfect pasta, she moved on to a new start-up. Janet knows all the stuff your mother always knows — like how to remove every kind of stain, and how to clean windows, mirrors, and all things fabric. She's also really into environmentally-friendly cleaning.

Jennifer Engel
Jennifer decorates from the trash and thrift shops. She's the carpentry expert on this panel — her latest project was a records/art books/VCR/cable box/TV stand. She also recently built bookshelves and a kitchen counter. She wired her house so that every room has a phone, fax, or modem, and she loves to fix old phones. She can also stain, strip, and reupholster furniture; she can sew, she can fix simple cars from the '70's, and she can cook. (And no, she's not applying for a position as a housewife.) When she's not doing all this, Jennifer builds props for movies and commercials.

Al Hoff
Al "Girl Reporter" Hoff is the editor and publisher of Thrift SCORE!, the preeminent thrifting zine in the world. She lives in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in a house full of amazing junk, and can tell you anything thrift-related. Ask her for cheap tips on furniture, cleaning stuff, fixing stuff, and making a tiny space look good.

Bernadette Noll
Besides being a regular columnist and conference host in the Women's Room, Bernadette loves tools. (She even married a tool geek.) Ask her which tool is right for which job, and ask her about any kind of small carpentry task — bookcases, birdhouses, speaker shelves, etc. Bernadette is also an expert at optimum space usage.

Karen O'Connor
Karen started her own faux painting business. She's an all-around handy girl, but her main area of expertise is painting any surface, including walls, woodwork, floors, metal, iron, ceramic, furniture, and anything else you can think of. Her company specializes in decorative painting, murals, and faux finishes. Karen knows how to install sinks and does entry-level carpentry work, like framing walls and building shelving. She's pretty much self-taught (from videos, books, and asking a million questions), and loves finding out how to do things — so ask her for help putting a plan together.

Candi Strecker
Candi's got common sense, which is why I asked her to be on the Handy Girls panel. She's a mother and a zine publisher, and she's just wise about life. Ask her about gardening, sewing, and general around-the-house stuff, like which household chemicals to use.
