Tripod member gussetgirl asks:
How do I get rid of that gross underarm B.O. smell
from cotton T-shirts (especially the cheapie close-fitting girlie numbers)?
Is there a way of doing it without hot water, which seems to work, but
fades the shirt?
Handy Girl Al suggests:
Cotton is a great active-wear fabric because its simple weave facilitates
vigorous cleaning. Unfortunately, the best solution for avoiding
perspiration stains and odor (caused by your body's bacteria) is to wash
the garment as soon as possible in hot water, with detergent, on the
regular agitation wash-cycle. The motion lets the soap and water
penetrate the fibers and carry away the dirt particles. Hot water
penetrates more quickly than cold, therefore it cleans better. However, hot water
will "fade" clothing more quickly (it's carrying away dye with the
dirt!), especially on cheaper garments. Frankly, it's a trade-off.
Prolong the vivacity of the garment by line-drying (dryer heat takes its
toll, too). If you line-dry out in the sun (free!), turn the shirt inside
out first to cut down on fading.
