Tripod member aluminum_3 asks:
I have a lot of mold on my bathroom tiles and don't have ten dollars to spend on X-14 or whatever it's called to get rid of it. Any cheaper solutions?
Handy Girl Candi suggests:
If mold is what's gunking up your bathroom tiles, you're
in luck there's a cheap solution, and it's called bleach. At your
supermarket, buy a jug of generic bleach and an empty "trigger-spray"
squirt bottle. In the bottle, mix about one part bleach to ten parts water.
Spray this onto the moldy tile, leave it alone to work for a few minutes,
then rinse with plain water. To discourage mold from growing back in the
future, always let the steam out of your bathroom after every bath or
shower by opening the window or running the bathroom vent fan.
Be careful with bleach wear rubber gloves while scrubbing with it,
don't get it in your eyes, and NEVER mix it with any product containing
ammonia.
If the gross stuff on your tiles is more of a chalky dust that bleach
doesn't remove, your problem isn't mildew, it's mineral deposits traces
of dissolved chemicals from your water supply. You can try the tightwad
approach of scrubbing this gunk off with baking soda and a scouring sponge.
Or spend a few bucks and save a lot of effort by using one of those
spray-on-wipe-off tile cleaners like X-14.
