Tripod member jasanderson asks:
How can I remove the moldy, musty smell from old books?

Handy Girl Al suggests:
Sadly, books are made from products that deteriorate. What you smell may be the binding glue, cover varnishes, or the paper dying (most books since the 1950s have cheaper high acid paper which degrades faster). Books also collect dust and are highly susceptible to mold, mildew and insect invasion — all of which smell. Existing mold or mildew on book covers can sometimes be gently wiped away using a dry cloth.

There is no fountain of youth for books — the damage is done. Remember these tips for preventing future decay: Dust your books regularly. Store books away from direct sunlight, out of too-dry areas (next to the heater) and free from humidity and moisture.
