Tripod member RAMPTONC asks:
Can I paint over brass? I would like to paint over a brass bed — can you tell me what kind of paint to use and any preparations required?

Handy Girl Karen suggests:
Assuming there's not some weird finish on the brass, you can paint over it if you prime it first with a metal primer. This is a Respirator-Required primer: very toxic, very head-swimmingly stinky. The kind I've used is called StaysOn. It works best if you paint immediately after priming (something about the paint forming a bond with the primer) and you can use water-based products over it, which is always a bonus. Let your project sit for a few days before banging it around.
