Tripod member RAMPTONC asks:
Can I paint over paneling? We are re-doing a travel home that has dark wall paneling. I have made new drapes and we are putting in new carpet and tile but the walls are really in need of an update.I bought some wallpaper cheap — that is my next option, but painting would be easier.

Handy Girl Karen suggests:
Oh, sure, you can paint anything if you start with the right primer. There are a number of oil-based primers that stick to glossy, difficult surfaces, and even better, there are some water-based ones available, too! Who wants to clean their brushes with mineral spirits? A professional paint store will certainly have the product for you. I'm sure that the paneling will look worlds better once you've painted it.
