Sometimes abuse is pervasive, built into the very structure of an organization. Elizabeth, a branch manager of a large organization, survived a period of downsizing with her job and health intact — but just barely.
In her case, bad feeling filtered down from the CEO, but the bloodshed didn't start until money got tight. Then, layoffs were ordered, with no explanation of who was getting the ax, on what basis, or
when. An atmosphere of fear spread throughout the office. Using confidential
ploys like "come on, just between us," the CEO baited Elizabeth to criticize her co-workers — "Don't you think so-and-so is..." At first she felt flattered by his selecting her for confidence. Then, Elizabeth found herself being criticized in front of others and excluded from meetings pertaining to her own programs. Most damaging of all, she was forced to fire her key staff members, which undermined her programs. She could not support her staff and she did not know who to trust.
Whatever the monetary cost that instigated it, the cost to her office of the
downsizing, in personal terms, has been inestimable. Morale may never be
restored. But Elizabeth is learning from the experience and resolves to
stand by her own principles, regardless what happens. "I believe in bringing
all you can into work. Work is sacred, deserving of joy, laughter, dedication. Just like families."

Let's look at how to do that. It is your job to decide how you want to be treated. Workplace abuse, like domestic abuse, thrives on helplessness — can't afford to lose the job, can't afford to leave the husband. This creates a situation where the bully can have his (or her) way. The first step out of helplessness is accepting that you are responsible for your own emotional health. The next step is knowledge. What are you feeling? What is really going on?
