interview with:
BARBARA FINDLEN
|
interviewed by Janet Daly on November 15, 1996
This week's profile is Barbara Findlen, the Executive Editor of Ms. Magazine. I first met Barbara fifteen years ago she was an editor then, too, and I was a new writer for our high school newspaper in suburban Boston. She was the person who taught me newspaper layout, getting copy to fit around ad space and how to edit judiciously. She also helped make me a better field hockey goalie, and really struck me as a together woman (at age 17 no less!).
Later, I was able to watch her lead Boston-based activist organizations, and read her Writings in Ms. She is also the editor of the 1995 book Listen Up: voices from the next feminist generation.
Who's afraid of the "F" word, and why?
Names are used, with some notable success, to prevent women from claiming
a feminist identity. Listen in to how the "L" word (lesbian) has been used as a divisive weapon, and how feminists can constructively turn it around.
|
Who should read "Listen Up?"
Barbara talks about who the book is for, the writers, and what might have been different had it been published ten years earlier.

Read the Women's Zone review of Listen Up.
