Having wheels is a great thing, but a car can also be the perfect "vehicle" for crime. Here's some advice to make sure that you're well prepared to deal with any safety problems that might arise while driving.

- Keep your car in good running condition.
- Know your route in advance, and have enough gas and money to avoid unplanned stops.
- Keep doors locked and keep windows up, especially when alone.
- Don't pick up hitchhikers.
- Consider acquiring a car-phone to use in an emergency.
- If someone is in trouble on the side of the road, don't stop. Instead, go to a telephone and call the police.

- Likewise, if you are stranded on the side of the road, put a sign in the window asking for someone to call the police. If someone stops and tries to help, stay in the car and ask them to call the police instead.
- Never go home if you are being followed. Go to a public area, especially a police station, and get help.
- Never let the gas indicator fall below 1/4.

- At traffic lights, leave enough room in front of your car to turn into the next lane.
- If you are involed in an accident, don't get out of the car until the police arrive. Trade insurance information through the window.
- Be suspicious of anyone approaching your car. If someone tries to enter your car, drive away immediately, even if it means going through a red light.
- Never let a stranger in your car with you at any cost.
