Everybody likes to have one of the first spots in the parking lot when shopping. As it turns out, waiting for one of these spots is not only for lazy people or those with fancy cars. Anyone concerned with safety would be wise to do the same. Parking areas are often convenient places for the would-be attacker or criminal to scope his or her next victim. Looking over the points below should help you practice safe parking every time.
- If someone approaches your car while you are loading it, get in and lock the door. Don't be afraid to leave packages or possessions behind.
- Look in the back windows of your car to make sure no one has hidden there.
- Scan your surroundings before getting out of your car.
- Park in well-lighted areas as close to the building as possible.
- Do not park next to a van. It is too easy for someone to surprise you and pull you in through the sliding door.
- Don't leave your purse or other valuables in plain sight in the car.
- Stay especially alert when parked in underground or enclosed garages.
- Give only the ignition key to a parking attendant.
- Back into parking spaces to make it easier to leave quickly if necessary.
- Avoid vulnerable moments by asking a clerk to carry groceries or packages out for you.
- Be alert when walking into a parking area. Look around and check under your car to make sure nobody is hiding there.
