As the crime rates of many campuses and cities rise, what can you do to protect yourself? You don't want to sit at home behind locked doors all day, which is why we created this list. Below are a few things that you might want to keep in mind in order to make the most of your journeys outside the old familiar places.

- Know where you are going, and stick to well-lit, busy streets. Avoid alleys, vacant lots, etc.
- Walk facing traffic.
- Know where the safe public places are in your neighborhood, such as police and fire stations, and late-night restaurants and stores.
- Carry your purse close to your body and keep a tight grip on it. Think about using a fanny pack, instead.
- Don't leave your wallet in your back pocket, where it can be easily grabbed.
- Expensive jewelry and clothing increase your chances of being confronted.

- Don't carry large packages or things that can distract you and hinder a reaction.
- Always carry change for a phone call.
- Have your keys in your hand before you get to your door.
- If you are being followed, do not go home. Head to a public place immediately, or go to a house and ask for help. Let a follower know that you see him by turning around and looking directly at him. If you really feel threatened, run to a public place while calling for help.
- Think about dressing in clothes that allow for easy mobility. You can always change into fancier clothes once you arrive at your destination.
