Whether getting around by subway, bus, or taxi, safety should always be your first concern. Staying alert and following these tips should keep you in good shape.

- Don't say anything that shouldn't be overheard, such as your destination or address, etc.
- While traveling by bus or subway, try to use well-lighted and frequently used stops.
- Stand away from the edge of the subway platform while waiting for your line.
- In the subway car, sit away from the exit doors to prevent a grab-and-run incident.
- Watch the people who get off the bus or train with you. If you feel uncomfortable, go to a public place immediately.
- Have exact change ready before you enter a bus.

- If you are travelling alone in a taxi it might be a good idea to let the driver know, in an offhand way, that you have his cab number. You can say "Hey number xxxx, that's my old address," or something similar.
- Try to sit near the driver or attendant.
- Always stay awake and alert on public transportation.
