2/23-2/29: What keeps you awake at night?
Red wine is good for you, a cup of tea is not, and AIDS is suddenly a celebrity disease. Health risks and miracle cures dominate the headlines, but which ones concern you? Tell us your biggest health fear, be it weight gain or cancer. Or tell us why you scorn health fears, and sleep peacefully at night.
little miss naughty - Though I was annoyed by the attention Tommy Morrison received recently for admitting that he thought he was "bullet-proof" as far as AIDS was concerned, I think I take the same attitude as far as my health is concerned. Short-term risks worry me, but long-term ones really don't bother me. I try to smoke fewer cigarettes because I'm concerned about being out of breath, not because I'm afraid of cancer.tony - My uncle died of cancer this past fall, and since then I've been really freaked out by the disease. I don't think about it on a daily basis, but sometimes I think about all the things I've been doing that might cause cancer. I work in front of a computer screen. How do we know that they don't cause cancer 30 years down the line? We don't, because we're the first generation that uses them on a regular basis. And there are tons of things like that. There's just no way to tell. And if we find out that they do cause problems, are we going to stop? No way. Computers, the Internet, and technology in general are too addictive. Forget crack, nicotine, meth. We've got a more serious problems on our hands.
jbegley - Anxiety and work deadlines mixed with travel. I recently had a 2 week stretch where I had several major projects due as well as some corporate travel. I would end up missing one out of three nights sleep. I would be working and suddenly it would be 4:00AM. I would have to be back in the office in 4 hours, not worth going to sleep. I crashed and burned for 3 days afterwords.
cylee - It seems as though lately every thing we do will decrease our lifespan. All my relatives lived into their 90's. I don't know if i really want to. I know I should quit smoking but I have given up all my other bad habits and think being clean and sober is good enough.
pagan - Well everyone has got to die at some stage so why stay awake all night worrying about something which may or may not happen?? Head down to your local doc and get yourself checked out for whatever you think you might have.. and if you've got it THEN start to WORRY about it. Getting something we know a little about is better than having the unknown happening to you... imagine IF alien abductions REALLY DO happen. Then anyone who happened to be unlucky enough to be picked could have all sorts of things done to them in the middle of the night. In my opinion fear is of the unknown. Grasp and understand what is unknown and you will no longer fear it. However there is always something unknown out there.. while you're at it you could also check out my homepage :) Here. Thats nuf said. :)
changj - If I die, I die!
wcwfan - The fear of getting cancer because I don't eat right.
Milagro - Hey you guys, Is that what makes you scared? Diseases you have this unbelivable slight chance of getting ? God, you're LUCKY ! I use condoms to prevent AIDS, and as for cancer -- well, I couldn't care less about that. I'm 21 years old, and already I was in the army and been to war. These things mean nothing to me. Keeping your health is the EASIEST, if your will is strong enough. The real problem is not health, it's money and success. I mean, hey, we're young, we're many, and each of us wants more to himself. We're going to struggle all the way up. I just wish my problems will maintain the size of remembering that condom next time I have sex. Or keeping myself off of smoking and red meat.
sbuandy - Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Liana - Why worry about tomorrow what you cannot change today. If you have a clear conscience, live a healthy life and have no debts.... you sleep more peacefully.
lirani - I'm not really worried about health since I'm a teenager. The only thing that I worry about is ruining my eyesight because I spend quite a bit of time in front of the computer screen.
CNT - What fear? I don't fear anything, except maybe dying young, being poor, not getting to see my kids have kids that are just as much trouble as they are, or one of the other million things I worry about because we are all just a little paranoid. Aren't we? You do agree don't you? Well don't you?
Snow - I don't really worry about any diseases or dying, cause we're all going to die -- right? I usually worry about what I have to do the next day, or what I have neglected to do that day. Stress is what keeps me up at night.
LadyDeVine - I'm overcaffinated...it's an engineering thing. My neighbors bass shakes my place sometimes, too.
graben - My greatest health fear is heart disease, followed by an automobile accident. I reduce my risks to both by playing hockey and driving defensively. I have never had trouble sleeping at night because of a health concern.
jacklloyd - I have no fears, exept for that if I get leprosy it's gunna be one hell of a pain in the ass. I mean, I'd hate for my arms to just fall off, at those inconvenient moments. Apart from that I fear falling off a three hundred story building, but since that sure as hell ain't gunna happen, I'm fine in that respect.
Nynaeve - I used to be afraid of everything, but not anymore. I believe that if you are positive and try to go through life smiling everything will be fine. The only thing that keeps me awake at nights is if I'm going to do something exciting tha day after. So be positive and keep on smiling.
Kimmy - I am actually pretty fearless, but sometimes THAT is what worries me.
WizTracy - Fear of Pat Buchanan actually becoming President gives me nightmares!
TONYBAKER - The Fear of phobias ... those are awful little things that come after all of us. How can we sleep knowing all those phobias are out there?
explorer - I suppose overpopulation is my long term worry. It seems to me as though nature has its own ideas on how to solve the problem. AIDS, decreasing sperm count, etc.
tracyo - Since my mother has been very sick for over 3 years now and is only 46, I have an incredible fear of severe illness and terminal diseases. I dread the thought of a major illness that would keep me lonely, poor, in pain, and unable to do the things I enjoy, like hiking, watching sunsets, and spending quality time with my husband. I often turn small things (like headaches) into much bigger things in my mind and spend too much time thinking that I have some horrible disease. I envy those who can think rationally about things like this and remain so positive, like many of the Tripod members who have already commented on this issue. I will try to take their advice and stop worrying so much -- mainly because I do believe that a positive attitude can make all the difference in the world.
Darklord - I'm not really afraid of any health issues, and I'm not afraid of death, just that it might come too soon.
rousseau - Cholesterol
rebs - I worry about not sleeping...about not getting the grades...about becoming overweight like my parents...about people laughing at me...about my computer shutting down...about everything...you name it..I worry about it...
MichaelSmith - My biggest fear is that I might one day get AIDS. And that one of my frinds is dying from AIDS and that I am not sure how to act/react to this.
Josh48 - Mostly Coke. Sometimes just my lamp.
Jimsan - My biggest fear: my wife and I will never get together again. This is logistical problem rather than a 'fall out of love' problem. She lives in Poland and I am here. Her career and my shambles of one make getting together a big problem. If Buchannan is elected, the situation is made worse.
