Thanks for becoming a member of Tripod. We hope you enjoy the service. As Tripod's Membership Director, I'd like to fill you in on some of the more interesting (and amusing) developments here at Tripod Central. We've come a long way since our service previewed in April. We will continue to be a FREE service. As a member of the Tripod community you, and over 12,000 other members, can access information on Work and Money, Politics and Community, and Living and Travel --"Tools for Life."
----+-----+------| Tripod Insider |------+-----+---- Ever wonder what it's like to run a Web site?
Who would have guessed that 12 people in a house in the middle of nowhere (Williamstown, MA) with a few computers connected by some wire and duct tape would build their own Web site?
Tripod may look good, but it's not always HTML fun and games. The things we're most proud are often the toughest things to pull off.
When Tripod first started offering daily content, one of the most difficult tasks was simply making sure the date was correct. Never mind keeping the server running, making sure our email works, or actually changing the survey question. If that date doesn't get changed, heads roll.
The Daily Interview is another feature that is tough to pull off every day. It astounds me how the editorial staff can keep finding such interesting people to talk to. The other day, the chairman of the Republican National Committee bailed on us at 11:00 PM the night of the interview. Without missing a beat, our editor cornered the press secretary instead and worked a good interview. If you've missed the Daily Interviews, visit our growing archives. With so many interviews, you can now hunt down past chats in three sections: Work and Money, Politics and Community, and Living and Travel. We've interviewed governors, writers, doctors, travelers, and even a nudist.
In the Living and Travel section, our Ask the Doctor service has been flooded with questions. At one point, Dr. Rob was faced with so many questions, he almost had a health problem of his own. Now our panel of experts answer a select number of questions and the doctor is a happier man. To keep things interesting, the "Doc" added a game where you could win a Tripod T-shirt if you correctly diagnose the Health Puzzler.
We do give away quite a few T-shirts. I have never spent so much time in the Post Office. Our postman is practically part of the staff. I had no idea how expensive it is to send stuff to New Zealand!
Every once in a while, everything does work itself out. The text gets written, the graphics get drawn, and the tech guys remember to plug in the server. Then we get some of the wonderful features you've seen and used.
The Top 3 features on Tripod are:
Homepage Builder -- over 3000 members have homepages on Tripod. Political Playbook -- top political issues updated weekly by our Washington correspondent. Resume Doctor -- create your on-line resume, it saves paper.
----+-----+------| Coming Soon |------+-----+---- Tripod continues to grow by adding more features every week.
If you haven't taken the time to scroll all the way to the bottom of The Daily Scoop to see what's coming up, new content includes Berkeley Guide to Italy, Tripod Guide to Hiking, and Personal Health Profile.
----+-----+---| Tripod Campus Rep Program |---+-----+---- If you are a college student and would like to get more involved with Tripod at your local campus, join the growing number of Tripod Campus Reps (it actually pays). For more information, send a message to [email protected].
