Tripod Insider

Vol. 2, No. 14

August 9, 1996

Welcome to another Tripod Insider -- your source for all things Tripod. This week some of us play some nighttime horseshoes and it's topless night in the tech suite. Find out more after reading about what's new on Tripod.

General News

The big tech news of the past week is that Tripod now has its own T-1 connection to the Internet. A T-1 can shovel out an enormous amount of data, in the neighborhood of 16 gigabytes per day. The upshot is that we can serve our members faster and more reliably than ever before. Of course, now that we can serve pages at incredible speed, more people are joining and coming back to Tripod, thus forcing us to consider getting a T-3 in a few months...

Content And Services

WORK & MONEY
The Work & Money section is business as usual -- except that there's nothing "usual" or ordinary about the Tripod take on finance and careers. First up, there's a new installment of Ken Kurson's monthly column, "The Buck Starts Here," and it's chock-full of practical tips for surviving student loans. The Dilemma solicits advice on behalf of a Tripod member who wants to ask his penny-pinching boss for a raise. Elsewhere, the Survey asks whether YOU would invest in tumultuous tech stocks and Tripod interviews Sue Rugge, the "Mother of Information Brokering." There's so much good stuff here this week, you won't even get in trouble if your boss catches you surfing the section!

POLITICS & COMMUNITY
This week in Politics & Community, Senator John Kerry (D-MA) chats with Tripod about his campaign, education, technology, and the future of America. Many experts believe that Kerry's race with Mass. Governor Bill Weld (R) will define the terms of the national debate between Democrats and Republicans. We are also launching "Tools for Thought," our weekly review section. "Hip Mama," a progressive parenting zine, is reviewed by yours truly. Don't worry, you don't have to be a parent to enjoy it. And finally, should we force welfare recipients to work, even if it costs the government more in the end? We want to hear from you!
Anthony Qaiyum, Editor

HOMELIFE
This week in Living & Travel, David Wallis finds Bedouin and breakfast in Jordan, and Daniel Hays travels 17,000 miles in a 25 foot boat. Doctor Bob chats about lesbian sex, heartache and blood pressure, and the Health Puzzler asks about alcoholics and sleeping pills. Check out a review of "Chic Simple: Eyeglasses" in the brand-new "Tools for Thought," and discuss stay-at-home vacations in the survey.

Tripod Insider

In the ongoing quest to entertain ourselves outside the office, a few of us participated in midnight horseshoes. Undeterred by the night, we pounded in some stakes (breaking a hammer in the process) and proceeded to pitch some horseshoes. Bruce demonstrated that he's as serious about his horseshoes as he is about accounting; the shoe had to be very close to count in this game. Regardless, Bruce and Anthony dominated the games due to Bruce's ability to throw ringers at will.

Speaking of ringers, the Tripod volleyball team played without the considerable skill of Nate, who is nursing an injury. Despite our youth and sobriety on the court, Anthony, Ethan, Mike and I still lost two games to one.

In more tech news, very early Sunday morning Jon and Jeff transported our servers from Northampton, Mass., 45 miles away, and installed them here at Tripod World Headquarters. We are now connected directly to a full T-1 line. Eyewitnesses report seeing the dynamic duo around 5 AM, dancing around the offices with their shirts off. Although Jon and Jeff claim it was because of the heat, it could have been some bizarre tech ritual. They may have sacrificed a old Macintosh SE/30 to the UNIX gods. Whatever it takes to keep the servers running.
