Tripod Insider

Vol. 2, No. 18

September 6, 1996

T Welcome to another Tripod Insider -- your source for all things Tripod. This week the Tripod Volleyball Team's season ends, Tripod celebrates another birthday, and the office welcomes a new addition, of the feline variety. Read all about it after the editors tell you what's new on Tripod.

General News

Tripod is venturing into the print world with our new "Tools for Life" magazine, published in conjunction with Prentice-Hall/Allyn & Bacon. Tripod's student members should look out for "Tools for Life" in your campus bookstore. The magazine is shrink-wrapped with Prentice-Hall and Allyn & Bacon textbooks, and offers useful advice and how-to information on a variety of subjects that compliment the practical content we provide on the Web site.

Content And Services

WORK & MONEY
There's some hocus-pocus in the air this week in the Work & Money section. Tripod's Personal Finance wiz Ken Kurson has a few tricks up his sleeve as he discusses the magic of compound interest, and the Dilemma has members trying to demystify insurance for a single Mom. Perhaps the hardest trick of all these days is finding a great job, but Tripod can help you without resorting to sleight of hand -- just check out the informative interview with best-selling career author Mike Farr and the eye-opening review of "303 Off-the-Wall Ways to Get a Job." Prepare to be amazed!
Randy Williams, Editor

POLITICS & COMMUNITY
This week in Politics & Community, William Cronon, a leading environmental historian, defines "wilderness." This interview may change the way you think about nature. Political Playbook details how tobacco is clouding the presidential campaign. The weekly survey examines the Gulf Strike: Clinton and Dole seem to know why we're involved in Iraq, but do you? Share your explanations or conspiracy theories with other Tripod members. Plus, we review the annotated edition of "Walden." Check out the new face on this classic of American thought.
Anthony Qaiyum, Editor

LIVING & TRAVEL
This week in Living & Travel, the self-titled "Madonna of the Infobahn" Spike Gillespie chats about making writing pay, women on the Web and how she met her husband online. Our homeopathy series continues with remedies for sports injuries, from tennis elbow to heat exhaustion. Doctor Bob discusses the risks of swallowing semen; mosquitoes and AIDS transmission; and how to watch for signs of breast cancer. In the Puzzler, debate a herpes secret; and in the survey, tell us your favorite malapropism (you know, like the Jimi Hendrix classic, "Excuse me while I kiss this guy"). In Tools for Thought this week, we review the old favorite "Fannie Farmer Cookbook" and discover that good cooking never goes out of style.

Tripod Insider

With much disappointment, the Tripod Insider must report that the mighty Tripod Volleyball team was ousted from the playoffs. Despite the last minute addition of C.E.Bo to the team and his considerable efforts, we lost the grueling match. The team's lack of experience, not to mention height, finally got the better of us.

We were able to overcome our sorrows later that night at a small gathering in honor of my birthday. The party got off to slow start, but picked up later. Highlights included "premium" punch balls and Baywatch Barbie (a gift from Kara). Margaret's gift, a miniature ping pong set, proved to be very practical, as Bruce and Anthony played some late night ping pong on the dining room table.

The most exciting office news is the arrival of Tripod's newest office pet. Bruce and Margaret adopted the cutest black kitten named Trixie Tripawed, who now roams our offices. Tri-pup, our previous pet, wanted more disk space so he moved to Florida. Bruce, a cat enthusiast, now has something to play with other than his calculator.
