Content And Services
C H A T !! Tripod's own chat has been tested by a load of intrepid Tripod members and now is ready for a public beta. Meet Tripod staff in the Chat Room from 6-8 p.m. U.S. eastern time Tuesdays and Thursdays. You can get started from the Planet Tripod homepage.WORK & MONEY
The Work and Money section is proud to present yet another scenic Career Safari attraction. Now, in addition to the "Find Job" and "Explore Careers" destinations, you will find a great page of features designed to help you "Work Smart." Drop by the Safari and discover all the ways we can help you make your way through the job jungle. Ken Kurson's popular column "The Buck Starts Here" examines the trend toward specialized mutual funds which appeal to an investor's social conscience -- with mixed results for the pocketbook. Bruce Tulgan, author of "Managing Generation X," looks at abusive bosses and the ethos of fear in a new "X Nuggets" column. Tools for Thought looks back at Oliver Stone's Academy Award-winning "Wall Street," a film which brilliantly captures the excesses of the Greed Decade. Thank goodness things have changed -- or have they? Dissatisfied workers are increasingly turning to revenge. There must be a few saboteurs among you. So, how about sharing your own personal tale of on-the job vengeance in this week's Survey? Then drop by the Work and Money Dilemma and help a Tripod member find ways of curing the Telecommuting Blues.Randy Williams, Editor
POLITICS & COMMUNITY
Harry Goldstein discusses why Hunter Thompson would be right at home covering the '96 campaign. Do the Presidential debates affect your vote? Respond to the P&C; survey. Randy Williams reviews Dennis Miller's "The Rants." And have you wondered about the real Columbus Day hubbub? Howard Zinn clues you in, and lets you decide for yourself.Michael Agger, Acting Editor
HOMELIFE
This week in Living and Travel,Tripod presents the Berkeley Guides online. Search the entire Europe Guide (25 countries) on Tripod, and build your own customized travel guide to print out and take on the road. Think of it as highlighting a huge book, except we only give you the text you highlight! And we chat with Berkeley Guides Executive Editor Sharron Wood about how to get the most out of a guidebook, and when to leave it at the hotel. The doctor, of course, is in. This week Doctor Bob chats about skin irritation, alcohol and your liver; and facial hair: is it true that sex will cure the latter? The Health Puzzler discusses leftover antibiotics: is it safe to take them without a doctor's advice? Try your hand at playing doctor and you might win a Tripod T-shirt. In Tools for Thought, we review Elvis Costello's "All This Useless Beauty." Read our verdict, listen to some clips and then rate the album yourself. Finally, in this week's survey, tell us: does online ticketing suck? Have you ever bought airline tickets online?

This week's Insider is brought to you from New York City, Tripod's home away from home. We recently opened a small office in the big city so Jodi, VP of ad sales, and Matt, Editor of the Tools for Life magazine, can stop working out of their apartments. Tripod NYC also welcomes Sandra Lalinde, an Account Executive, who fortunately was hired after we got the office.Just because they work in a city doesn't mean that the Tripod folks in the new office are not the same lovable Tripodians as those of us in Williamstown; they just dress better and wear shoes on a regular basis. The actual office is not so different either, other than the fact that the building can probably hold the entire population of Williamstown. There are wires all over the office, left-over Chinese food in the conference room, and Tripod stickers everywhere. The general chaos is not helped by the fact that the intercom system consists of Matt yelling across the room to Jodi before transferring a phone call, with Sandra in the middle translating.
Opening a new office just wasn't enough, so Tripod threw a party in New York Tuesday night. Most of the Williamstown crew took a field trip to the Big Apple for a taste of city life. A good time was had by all who attended the party. New Tripod employees met old Tripod employees; the Web site staff met the magazine staff; writers talked to bankers; tech people mixed with advertising people. That's right, tech people were mingling! It was sheer schmoozing mayhem.
