WORK & MONEY
Beth Kobliner, best-selling author of "Get a Financial Life," stops by the Work & Money section to impart advice on taking charge of credit card debt in this week's "Personal Money Matters" column. Most of us will have to deal with creditors at some point in our lives -- but the Tripod member who submitted this week's Dilemma has a particularly gruesome story of collection agency hassles. Why not drop by and offer some advice on dealing with credit woes.
Major corporations don't have to worry about such credit worries, of course -- they can just write off their losses or debt while getting tax incentives from Uncle Sam. This week's Survey asks for your opinion on corporate welfare.
Bruce Tulgan, author of "Managing Generation X," contributes his last "X Nuggets" column, and it's a corker about getting feedback on your work performance. Would you like to see another series of columns by Nugget Boy? Drop us a line at [email protected] and let us know.
Catherine Hedgecock, our token West Coast correspondent, shares her thoughts on the new book "We've got to Start Meeting Like This!" in this week's "Tools for Thought."

POLITICS & COMMUNITY
Howard Zinn explains why Presidential elections don't matter -- historically, real social change has always come from citizens' movements.
Do you ever wonder why Bob Dole never appears in his own campaign ads? Because he scares the bejeezus out of women. Laurie Ouellette explains how the new Dole ads try to woo the soccer mom vote.
Media stereotypes of homeless people tend to focus on freeloaders, crack addicts and bag ladies. The truth is much more complex. Read about the National Coalition for the Homeless.
The conservative members of Tripod finally got their say in last week's survey. This week, the survey focuses on a California ballot initiative that would abolish affirmative action. Let's talk about the issue the major candidates are avoiding.
And, to all the Libertarians who keep asking for a profile of Harry Browne - write one yourself and send it to me!

HOMELIFE
This week in Living and Travel, we visit a town in Switzerland that has nothing to offer to the middle class. It's for the rich man or poor man, a town best experienced in the extreme. Welcome to Verbier, where they've been dreaming of winter since July:From the road to the superhighway, this week's survey begs for a new Internet metaphor. Enough of the Information Superhighway; that horse has taken a fair beating. Make up your own metaphor, and tell us, what is that thing you do?
Doctor Bob advises on depression treatments, consoles a member who's graying early (is there ever a good time to go gray?), and explains the non-beef method for curing anemia. Finally, in the Health Puzzler -- do you ever get that dizzy feeling when you get up in the morning? Maybe you just need coffee, but maybe there's a bigger problem. Make the diagnosis.

This week the Tripod crew celebrated not one, not two, but tri- birthdays. Christina, DeWitt, and Janet had birthdays on Saturday, Monday, and Tuesday respectively. I won't reveal you who oozed anxiety over turning 30, but her name does rhyme with "planet."In less festive news, another soccer season has come to a close for Team Tripod. After a very successful regular season we were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. Despite horrible field conditions (as well as being short handed) we played to a 0-0 tie, but lost in the shootout. Now it's time to recruit for next spring. We've heard a scouting report about a programmer with a pretty good left foot up in Vermont.
On Halloween, the tech guys received a little treat in the form of a WebTV. Free candy and Web access through a TV - tech heaven. Jon now has a glazed look on his face and refuses to give up control of the remote. He is taking the concept of "channel" surfing to a whole new level.
