| Why are the files I uploaded to Tripod (for use on another site) not working?
| Are you trying to remote-load files on Tripod? Tripod does not allow the embedding of MIDIs, WAVs, MPEGs, and similar files from such remote sources as e-mail and external auction sites. You may still freely embed files that are part of your Tripod pages. In the past, we have allowed the remote use of GIFs, due to the small size of this type of file. This policy is subject to change.
| I use graphics and/or sound in my e-mail signature. Why don't they work anymore?
| This is a classic example of remote loading, which is not allowed under Tripod's Terms of Service. If you use graphic files other than small GIFs, they will not work in your signature. Using sound files such as MIDIs and WAVs in e-mail is also considered remote loading, and is prohibited by Tripod's Terms of Service.
| What is remote loading?
| Remote loading occurs when files are stored on one site for access on another server. A Tripod page storing image files for use on a non-Tripod page is an example of remote loading.
| What should I do if I was previously remote loading on Tripod?
| That's easy - try transloading. You can transload your large files using an online transloader, such as the one found at starblvd.net, a true transloader, or at gifworks.com, an image manipulation site that allows you to save your image anywhere on the Web. Transloading allows you to copy a GIF, JPG, MIDI, or WAV file from the Web into your Tripod Member Directory. You are no longer remote loading because all of your files live in your Tripod directory.
Here's an example of transloading:
- Joe has a page on Homepages-R-Us.
- Sue has a page on Tripod.
- Sue likes Joe's picture of a horse and transloads it (after getting his permission) to her directory on Tripod, using starblvd.net, gifworks.com, or another transloader.
- Sue then puts this code on her page to make the image appear:
<img src="http://members.tripod.com/Sue/horse.jpg">
The image is now saved in Sue's Tripod directory and not Homepages-R-Us and no remote loading is occurring.
| Why doesn't Tripod allow remote loading?
| Simply put, remote loading is expensive. Tripod uses advertising to pay for the cost of hosting people's Web pages for FREE. Remote loading substantially drives up our cost by increasing the bandwidth we need to purchase. We don't want to have to pass that cost on to our members; we want to keep your pages FREE.
| What is bandwidth?
| Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data you can send through a connection in a given time, usually measured in bits per second. If you think of the connection (or communications path) as a pipe, bandwidth represents the width of the pipe. This measurement determines how much data can flow through at one time. A fast modem can move about 15,000 bits per second. To give you a rough idea of what that equals, a full page of text is about 16,000 bits.

| Are Tripod's Terms of Service meant to single out WebTV users?
| Not at all! Tripod's Terms of Service apply to all Tripod members. We do not mean to single out any of our users. Our general Terms of Service state:"Tripod Member Web Page and Member Conduct Guidelines" "The following is a nonexclusive list of actions and content that are prohibited on the Site. Tripod may cancel any Membership associated with such actions or content, or may remove any associated Member Web Page with or without prior notice, at its sole discretion." "i) Use of a Member Web Page as storage for remote loading, or as a door or signpost to another homepage." We understand that WebTV users may not have a hard drive on which to store their files. Still, it's too expensive for Tripod to purchase the bandwidth in order to store these files. Tripod is, however, continuing to allow the remote use of GIFs since this type of file is reasonably small and is most often used in banner exchanges and Web rings. Please be aware that this is subject to change.
| What is an "interstitial"?
| An interstitial is a Web page that appears between the Web page you're coming from (where you clicked a link) and the one to which you're going.
| When I click on the link to download a file from my site, I get an interstitial page even though it's loading from my Tripod directory to one of my pages. Why?
| This may happen if you're trying to download a large file. This is a major cost issue. In order to support files over a certain size, we are forced to make sure that each file's bandwidth is paid for by an advertiser. Therefore, we need to make sure the file will be kept on Tripod so it will contain an ad. This will probably happen with MP3, ZIP, SIT, or other "archive" files that need to be downloaded to be enjoyed.
| I pay for a No-Ad Premium Membership. Why do I still get an interstitial ad page when I download large files?
| At this time, the new policy covers all Tripod members. We will alert you if anything changes in the future.
