Help us rename Planet Tripod:

Ever since we launched the Planet Tripod section, people have either loved the name or hated it. Now that the section is about to undergo major renovations, we thought it was the right time to rename it. Ultimately, this section is all about Tripod members, so we'd like to know what you think. Should we rename Planet Tripod? If yes, what name(s) would you suggest?

Here's what Tripod members said:

AlMiller: It it ain't broke, why fix it? You will probably hear stuff like "Tripod Galaxy" or the "All New Planet Tripod" -- but why even bother with a name change? Changing things like names, logos, jingles, and trademarks tend to alienate people from what they associate with familiarity, security and stability. Look what happened to Coca Cola and the NBC Peacock, when over-zealous marketing people tried to mess with with those long-standing icons. As for Planet Tripod: Who really cares?

jkahn: I'm torn. On the one hand, I don't like the "TRIPOD" name because it evokes images of, er, an overly well-endowed male. Ick. On the other hand, changing the name would require that I republicize the changed URL for my homepage. Not a pleasant alternative. All things considered, I can probably live with the seamier connotations of "TRIPOD". Keep up the good work!

DMacDonald: I like Planet Tripod. It sounds like a place, and a unique place, somewhere above our heads. I really don't like the Village or the Farm. Sounds too hokey, like the whole place is populated by folks in Birkenstocks making lanterns out of old tin cans and playing the pan flute. The Universe is just too pretensious. Polis has no meaning for me. I tend to like names that incorporate "planet" or "world" like Geekworld, which another site uses. Guess what I'm saying is I'm for sticking with the current name.

DarrellG: I think Planet Tripod works fine. It rather invokes an image of the entire world being connected under this "tripod" blanket. That's kind of neat to think about how connected we all are on the Internet...
I'm not so sure about the "Tripod" though. The first time I saw it, for some reason I thought of those giant mechanical creatures from some science fiction story years ago. It used to be published in Boy's Life in the '80s.

grok: It's a sad state of affairs that some members don't even know what a tripod IS (I suggest they examine the opening page), or if they DO know, they imagine the pornographic... (we've GOT to do something about our high schools people!!!!)
Anyway, why not stick with the science theme with something related, like "THE APEX", or similar? If it ain't broke though, why fix it?
