2/15-2/21: The Rise of the Religious Right

Buchanan's strong finish in Iowa has given him "serious threat" status in the race for the GOP nomination. Is he a presidential prophet or a devil in disguise? How will he do in New Hampshire?

Here's what Tripod Members said...

tony: Hopefully in new hampshire he won't have the Konservative Kristian Kooks to back him up. Or at least not so many!

nvance: Although I will not vote for him, I think he has become a serious contender in the Republican race. Hopefully he will not split the Republican party, they do not need this right now. The main thrust is to unite and to beat Clinton in the Nov. elections. I don't think he is the man to do this.

Lakean: Sick, demented, will crash and burn in New Hampshire My Prediction-> Steve Forbes

scott: Pat B is a slimy old poop, just like the rest of them. Creepier than Dole, who at least has the courtesy to wear his creepy-hood on his face. Lamar seems like a good guy, doesn't he? Except for the fact that he is running for President, I'd vote for him if I had to vote Republican. Which I won't, anyway.

anonymous: Buchanan is saying things that America wants to hear. Most Christians feel that this country would be so much better if "they" were in charge. He'll do well in NH and the midwest, but expect his popularity to fall when the Primaries reach the west.

AHJAZZ: I could not vote for a candidate as narrow-minded as Buchanan. His appeal to make America "as it once was"is easy to say, much harder to do. His ties to racist groups and the militia movement should raise warning flags to all Americans. I think that voters will find his brand of politics wanting.

TONYBAKER: Why does everything have to be "serious threat" and "radical hard core religious right?" Perhaps, Buchanen is a bit extreme, ... but just maybe the same supporters that are so easily LABELed the so-called "religious" right, just happen to be the same kind of people that volunteer in their community, the same kind of people who drove hundreds of miles to help with the OKC resque, and perhaps these are the same people who just want your lives and the lives of their children to be better than their own. TONYBAKER... TULSA OKLAHOMA.

TBlackmore: I think he would make a pretty "scary" president. Especially when I think of some of the hard core nut cases that he would appoint to positions of power in the Goverment.

robertm: He is the devil, no disguise.

olegator: I am a conservative in politics, social issues, economics, and Christianity. Pat Buchanan scares me. He is not a conservative, he is a reactionary. His philosophical stand is destructive to the already frayed fabric of our country. His isolationist, "America First" rhetoric is reminiscent of Pre-WWII isolationists, and echos the German-American Bund speeches. I think he will do a respectable 3rd place finish. perhaps that will frighten enough conservatives to get behind a more reasonable candidate.

rgrover: On abortion issues he's on track however his protectionist, isolationist politics are dangerous and unfair to people who were not lucky enough to be born in this country. America is the best country in the world but it does not follow that it's inhabitants are the most deserving of it's blessings. In fact we are often quite unappreciative of the contributions of those who gave thier lives that we might enjoy these freedoms. Those from more repressive societies might appreciate and contribute more than those of us who have become slothfull and apathetic. There are still some things worth dying and living for! Vote for Alan Keyes!

Twinfinity: Pat Buchanan is the best thing Bill Clinton could have hoped for.

Chamster: The Bible states that a man, a powerful man, will become head of a great nation. This man will hid under the disguise of a man of the Faith. This man is in truth the anti-christ. i believe this is what Buchanan is. Maybe not the Biblical Anti-Christ....But certainly close.
