This week: Campaign Theme Songs

It sounds like a bad joke: Thousands of GOP convention goers getting funky, Republican style, to the song "Soul Man" -- only they sing "Dole Man." Yet that's exactly what happened at the close of Tuesday night's convention ceremonies.

Can you do any better? If you could choose theme songs for the Dole and Clinton campaigns, what would you choose? And why?

A new Politics & Community survey is published each Thursday.

Here's what Tripod members said:

Lolina: Dole: Neil Diamond's "America", because it will make him look like a big cheeseball. Not to dis Neil, but it's a really awful song.

Clinton: "The More you Ignore Me, the Closer I Get" my Morissey, because every time the Republicans stop bugging him about his past indiscretions or dumb decisions he's made, he actually gets some good stuff done.

kara: For Clinton: Let's see, people running around, constantly trying to fix up the latest trauma, while simultaneously worrying about their sex lives -- what better than the "ER" theme music?

For Dole: Okay, umm, old, boring, definitely a "politician"...how about some nice Lawrence Welk bubble music?

BrianB: I prefer to examine the disco theme song possibilities. Bob Dole: Due to questions about his age and health, perhaps his theme song could be "Stayin' Alive" by the BeeGees. Bill Clinton: Clinton could take Republican jabs at his supposed sexual encounters and use them to his advantage. How about "We Are Family" by Sister Sledge.

rgrover: Clinton: Roxanne(you don't have to put out the red light) Dole: Freebird!

aardvark69: For Dole:the Goodbye song from the Sounds of Music--he'll be singing it for along time staring at the wall. Stick to a commercial theme for Bill: I 'm gonna wash Jack Kemp right out of my hair... (this could make a new shampoo spot)

grok: For Bill Clinton: The old Three Dog Night song, "Liar," and for Bob Dole, Rocky Mountain Breakdown... (Don't remember who)

Regis9: What we need is some good, old-fashioned values to bring the boys home. How about some 'The Band' music? For Billy boy: "Slippin' and Slidin'" and for Bobby: "The Last Waltz Regrain #".

wmills: Let's try "The Closer You Get, the Further I Fall," by (I think) Alan Jackson. It seems like the closer we get to actually considering voting for Dole, he falls on his face. - Wes Mills

mags: Dole: "There's A Dole On the Ballot, Dear Liza, Dear Liza" Clinton: "I'm Just A Bill, And I'm Sittin' Here on Capitol Hill"

Bbbeans: For the Clinton campaign, to appeal to the Grateful Dead voter bloc, "Touch of Grey". And for the Dole campaign, the new song by Alice in Chains, "Over Now." Because really, the title says it all.

sgdaniels: Clinton's campaign theme should be Nowhere Man.
Dole's campaign theme should be Old Man River.
