When I moved to Tripod in June, I had no expectations of what I was going to find in Williamstown or at my new employer: Tripod, Inc. There was a lot going on: I was breaking it off with a girlfriend, quitting my job at Digital Equiptment Corp, moving away from my family and returning to the place where I spent my college years: Western Massachusetts. A little background on Western Mass: this is the land of the Minutemen, the Mohawk Trail, and Milwaukee's Best Light in cans. I like to call it the Motherland, despite its weird political past. When Randy asked me to write a Letter from Tripod, I at first imagined a sweeping article on the New Production Model in Digital Media and its Implications, but I decided to instead make a laundry list of things I have learned while at Tripod. I think this will be just as informative, and as hard-hitting.
1. I really like to play Ping Pong. When my nemesis Dick "Buck" Wilde challenges me to a game, I get more than ready: I get into the zone.2. The autumn is the best season of the year, particularly out here. Driving with my friend from Southern California, I realized how amazing this season is. She would hit me and yell when she would peep a colorful tree. I learned to appreciate the beauty.
3. I still maintain that multiprocessors based on conventional Von Neuman processors (process base) have some inherent limitations which usually make large-scale parallelism hard to achieve. Meanwhile Dataflow architectures maximizes flexibility and opportunity for parallelism by removing all overheads or ordering instructions except the constraints of Data and control dependencies.
4. Gaiking is one of the most powerful of the Shogun Warriors. His ability to turn from robot to transport is a statement of the versatility of modern technology.
5. I enjoyed hanging out with my mom. She visited me out here.
6. The Shaw Brothers know how to make a movie. I recommend 5 Deadly Venoms.
7. Tripod is an amazing company, filled with dedicated, intelligent individuals working together to provide an amazing place to build a homepage, join a conference, or hang out. Set your start page here, holmes.
8. Going to Europe with the Black Pig Liberation Front to perform "The Revolution of Everyday Life", turned out to be seriously weird. Holland is the second best place in the world.
9. The Company Flow record is the best Hip Hop LP of 1997.
10. Despite all of these realizations I've made since being here, it all comes down to one: relativity. It's all about time and space, and I've found both.
Keep it real.
Chris Johnson, Production Assistant (10/24/97)
