Jesse Milden, Designer:

Dear Sports Fans,

Music has been a regular part of my daily life for as long as I can remember. When I was growing up, one of the worst punishments my parents had was to take away my radio.

When I moved from New York to Williamstown to work at Tripod, two of my biggest concerns were that I wouldn't be able to satisfy my habits for regular doses of live music and that I would miss my frequent excursions to favorite used CD stores in the East Village. A good friend (always the voice of reason) said, "Yeah, the job sounds cool — but where will you get the import jungle beats on vinyl?"

Some satisfaction for consumption of new releases has been found through Hear No Evil on Tripod. For more obscure jungle/trip-hop, the breakbeatscience site is always a pleasure. And I'm doing my part to validate online transactions as a viable revenue source on the Internet.

For the uninitiated, "jungle" and "drum and bass" are styles of music incorporating fast "break beats" similar to early James Brown snare — with an subtle bass line often only implied — and a variety of other noise tastefully mixed in. I like it. An off-hand note to those not familiar with this stuff: You don't have to dance to the rapid-fire snare beat. As with most finer genres of music, melody lines may attract your attention but it's the rhythm section that really matters. Relax and listen to the bass.

My involvement with music has become more interactive. Merritt, one of my first non-Tripod friends in Williamstown, offered me the chance to co-produce a radio show and join her on the air at WCFM. Our show features music by artists that will be playing live in the vicinity of Williamstown. I've enjoyed researching the different local venues and performers playing in the Berkshires and sharing them with our dedicated listeners. I'm looking forward to a summer filled with outdoor concerts and music festivals

Before my exposure to WCFM, I had spent time assisting behind the scenes at KCRW in Santa Monica, but had never actually been on the air.

When Matt moved to town and became my roommate, he augmented my lonely turntable with another turntable and a mixer. Word spread and we were soon asked to DJ some of Tripod's swankier social events (with mixed reviews). No longer the open-minded DJ I once was, I've developed some bad habits. I rarely take requests; I spin an eclectic mix. If you don't like the current song... the next one will be different.
