From Margaret Gould Stewart, Creative Director:Boy, am I glad I got married.
You see, Tripod's staff is full of bright, energetic, and competitive folk. Sometimes it's hard to stand out from the crowd. Luckily, I am one of only very few people on staff who have "taken the plunge". This isn't surprising, considering the fact that at the age of 25, I am one of the oldest staff members.
That being said, I find that according to many members of the staff, being married is my defining characteristic. I became aware of this a couple of weeks ago when I met the parents of Kara, our Director of Communication, for the first time.
"Mom, Dad....you remember me telling you about my married friend, Margaret, don't you?"
I thought it was a fluke. Then Emma's parents came to visit from England.
"Mum, Dad....this is Margaret...the married one...and this is The Husband."
No, that's not a typo. People in the office like to refer to David as The Husband, a show of respect for this brave man who has gone where, among Tripoders, few have gone before.
I guess I shouldn't be surprised at their fascination. When my friends here at Tripod drove me to the Albany airport to return to Tennessee for my wedding, they were clearly more nervous than I was. In between verses of "Going to the Airport, So That Mags Can Get Married", I kept catching these glances of bizarre fascination, their expressions saying in so many words, "My God, does she know what she is doing?"
I am happy to say, in retrospect, that I did know what I was doing. Getting married is lots of fun. It's the biggest and best party you'll ever throw. It's a chance for your best friends from grade school, high school, and college to finally meet. It's a chance to get dressed up and be the center of attention for an entire day. And for the youngest child in a family of nine kids, that's a dream come true.
Best wishes,
The Married OneP.S. Thanks to all of the Tripod members who sent me e-mails of congratulations...I really appreciate your good wishes!
