Deadline. Pressure. What to do?

I sit here contemplating my task — write a letter, talk about anything. But I have no idea what I want to talk about. And now — today is the day.

I could talk about my introduction to this cute little burg known as Williamstown. It was early October and the most incredible thing about the Berkshires was the leaves! Or maybe it was the people looking at the leaves. But I didn't think that was worth an entire letter.

So someone suggested I talk about the winter. My response: "What winter?" While making the decision to take this job and move from warm, sunny Virginia, I was bombarded by winter storm warnings. Being from Chicago, the idea of a cold, snowy winter was not intimidating. Nothing could be worse than having your eyelashes freeze together while walking down Michigan Avenue in a -65 degree wind chill. My snowboarding son was looking forward to snow measured in feet instead of inches, but winter so far this year has not even come close to my previous experiences — so I didn't think that was worth an entire letter either.

The stairs. That was the suggestion my best friend and life-long companion made while trudging up the 59 steep, metal stairs that greet me every morning as I huff and puff my way to work. But who wants to hear about an age-challenged woman who can't sprint up the stairs like her 17-year old son? So I discarded that idea as well.

So the only thing left for me to say is that I really enjoy being here. After working for several rather large companies, it's nice to be in a place where everyone knows everyone else. Politics and bureaucracy are not running the company and making decisions. And the people here are genuinely nice. Teamwork is not a platitude, it just is. And I am happy to be here.
