4. How did your college major / graduate school degree help prepare you for your career path?
The finance and economics I learned are necessary to understand the technology we implement.
5. What necessary career information was missing from your studies? How did you pick up those skills and knowledge?
The missing skills were:
I got some of this education by learning on-the-job (learning from managers and peers I respect). All of the companies I worked for offered excellent training.
- negotiation/bargaining
- formal listening/interview skills
- proposal writing
- business writing in general
6. What difficulties did you encounter entering your chosen field?
No formal training. I was NOT a comp sci major (or engineer, etc).
7. Why would you recommend your company or job?
This company is well-regarded and profitable. We are among the leaders in an industry which is doing well.
8. How does the size of your company impact your sense of job satisfaction?
It's difficult to make a big impact. However, it's always a fun challenge to keep stepping back to see how your solution can help the (ever) larger audience.
9. What three things are most rewarding about the work you do?
- helping/teaching people about technology
- saving money/making money for the company
- I enjoy the job - it provides freedom at work...and the money to enjoy myself outside of work.
10. What three things are most frustrating?
- Wall Street attitude. Many people here are not interested in helping each other
- Lack of discipline. Groups/projects doing what's right for them...and not doing what's right for all of us
- The need to know more. There just isn't enough time to learn all I need about software, technology, finance, brokerage, etc
11. What three things are most fun?
- Making something work for the first time
- Finally understandings something you did not previously
- Working with the stock market in general - it's exciting
12. How do you handle work stress?
Running long distance
Spending time with wife and baby
Partying in NYC
Spending time with my dog13. How big a role does technology play in your career?
Huge. I'm in the Technology department; it's my job.
14. How do you distinguish yourself from your co-workers?
I'm not a computer geek. I'm either an MBA who understands technology or a technologist who understands finance. I wear different hats depending on the audience.
