Career Rule #1: Have Fun Getting to Know Thyself

Rule #1: to be happy in work, know your aptitudes and inclinations, and also know what you aren't quite suited for. Be honest with yourself. Katherine Anne Porter, the novelist and short story writer, said that the key to success was knowing what she wasn't good at, and then deliberately not doing it.

You'd be amazed at how many people don't follow that rule. They are the ones who aren't happy in their careers. Don't be one of them.

Here are two Web tests based on the popular Myers-Briggs Personality Profile: each is short and will deliver to you via e-mail or your browser an assessment that may be useful as you think of what career to pursue.

Personal Profile
Use the online form to answer 20 questions about your likes, dislikes, and preferences. You will then receive a fairly in-depth profile via e-mail, which can be used as a guide for investigating careers that are a realistic match for your personality type.

The Keirsey Temperament Sorter
A Jungian Personality Test with 70 questions. Take the quiz online and get an immediate "score" on your Web browser. The resulting information is not as job-oriented as the Personal Profiler, but it does provide some interesting details that the other test excludes.
