The Berkeley Guides:
Great Britain and Northern Ireland:
London
By Jennifer Dawson
En route to London for the first time, the American novelist Henry James was advised by a fellow train passenger to visit St. Paul's Cathedral. While running an errand in the City on his first morning, he happened to pass St. Paul's. Though the statue of Queen Anne in the forecourt struck him as "very small and dirty," he was still impressed by the scene: "All history appeared to live again, and the continuity of things to vibrate through my mind."
