The Lake District
By Irene J. Nexica
The Lake District National Park contains remarkably varied features. Scafell Pike, England's highest peak at 3,210 feet, and other nearby mountains are steep and craggy enough to make for challenging hikes, and the views of the valleys, fells, and 100-plus lakes certainly capture the romantic imagination. Perhaps that's why the area's best-known writers and critics--from Wordsworth and Coleridge to Beatrix Potter--are famous for their celebrations of nature.
