Berkeley Guide to Central America:
Belize
By Jennifer Brewer
If freakish plate tectonics had shorn the nation of Belize from its skinny stretch of continent 400 years ago and sent it drifting into the Caribbean Sea, it couldn't seem more different from the rest of Central America than it does today. Squeezed onto the Yucatán peninsula south of Mexico and west of Guatemala, this Lilliputian, English-speaking nation is physically isolated from its Latin neighbors by the rugged, nearly impassable Maya Mountains to the south and west and by a spectacular barrier reef along its coast. The result is a country more Caribbean than Latin American, one blessed with probably the most peaceful political climate in the entire region. Even though its citizenry includes a potentially volatile mix of Latinos, blacks, and whites, Belize doesn't make big headlines like neighboring Guatemala. In fact, Belize, the size of Massachusetts but with a total population of less than 250,000 (i.e., about half that of Boston), rarely makes any kind of headlines at all. This might explain why many travelers greet the phrase "Let's visit Belize" with a vacant stare.
