Berkeley Guide to Central America:

Guatemala

By Julie LeDuff and Mara Loveman

Guatemala's appeal as a travel destination is its mind-boggling diversity of people, culture, religion, and landscape. With the largest indigenous population in Central America, Guatemala is home to more than 100 distinct ethnic groups who speak more than 20 languages, from the Afro-Guatemalan Garifuna of the Caribbean Coast to the Highland Quiché. Flanked by the Pacific and Atlantic oceans and bordering Mexico, Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador, Guatemala is, in the words of poet Pablo Neruda, the "sweet waist" of the Americas.
