Berkeley Guide to Central America:
El Salvador
By Carlos Pineda
Most people's knowledge of El Salvador does not extend far beyond what they've seen in newspapers about the country's 15-year civil war, which finally ended in 1992. The umbrella organization of revolutionaries, the Farabundo Martí Front for National Liberation (FMLN), traded guerrilla tactics for political strategies to participate in El Salvador's democratic electoral system. Today, peace does reign, and the Salvadoran pueblo (people) are committed to making it a lasting one. Yet a culture that has seen remarkable violence does not readily put away its arms, and overt political violence has given way to a dramatic increase in both street and organized crime. While travelers should clearly take common-sense precautions, especially in the urban jungle that is San Salvador, the potential danger should not deter you from getting to know El Salvador.
