What is a Personal Planner?
As a rule, the farther in advance you buy the ticket, the less expensive it is. Keep in mind that "advance purchase" to an airline does not mean a week before departure. On your fateful departure day, remember that check-in time for international flights is a long two hours before the scheduled departure. One more news bulletin: Flights lasting more than six hours are usually smoking flights--so if fumes make you queasy, book short air-hops or ask for seats as far away from the smoking section as possible; if you love to light up, book long and straight.

The Berkeley Guides:
Berkeley Guide to Europe:
Basics
Information to help you orient yourself in Europe...
If you've ever traveled with anyone before, you know the two types of people in the world: the planners and the nonplanners. You also know that travel brings out the very worst in both groups: Left to their own devices, the planners will have you goose-stepping from attraction to attraction on a cultural blitzkrieg, while the nonplanners will invariably miss the flight, the bus, and the point. This Basics chapter offers you a middle ground, providing enough information to help plan your trip without saddling you with an itinerary or invasion plan. Keep in mind that companies go out of business, prices inevitably go up, and sooner or later you're going to miss a train connection. If you wanted predictability, you should have stayed home.
