Bohemia
With its rolling green hills, medieval towns and castles, and hearty food and drink, Bohemia conjures up a comfortable travel dream. Although it was torn apart in the religious tumult of the Thirty Years' War (1618-48), the area has survived the upheavals of the last three centuries comparatively unscathed. Even four decades of Communist rule touched Bohemia with a relatively light hand, leaving behind few concrete boxes and smokestacks.
