The Lake Region

A map of Finland looks a little tattered in the southeast, like a curtain with cat-claw scratches. Over 180,000 lakes and a seemingly endless series of rivers, canals, and inlets break up the forested landscape. The area, a mecca for thousands of Finnish vacationers, is dotted with tiny lakeside cabins and summer resorts, perfect for weekend relaxation. Somehow the railways of the Lake Region skirt the water obstacles, connecting a garland of larger cities: Tampere, Jyväskylä, Kuopio, Savonlinna, and Lahti. In addition to regular buses and trains, water buses and cruise ships are common means of transportation, and hiking, biking, and canoeing are good bets for a leisurely tour. The Lake Region is heavily visited, but odds are you'll find a canoe route, hiking path, or cove that you can call your own.
