Alsace-Lorraine
Although the two regions are almost always grouped together, Alsace and Lorraine actually have distinct personalities. Alsace is more German, more exciting, and more popular, with welcoming towns that cater to tourists without being touristy. Most Lorraine towns are poorer than their Alsace neighbors and hardly know what to do with tourists; they're fine if you want to get a taste of everyday village life, but otherwise they don't have much to offer. The notable exception is Nancy, a good-time university town with enough sights to keep you busy for a week.
