Northern Greece
Northern Greece is less visited than the south, and at first glance it's easy to see why. Travelers often pass through the transport hubs of Vólos or Alexandroúpolis and figure they've seen enough. You can be sure, though, that if they had explored the monasteries at Metéora, built on the heights of rock pinnacles rising more than 545 meters, they wouldn't have been so quick to move on. The north may not have as many miles of drop-dead-gorgeous coastline as the south, but the sparsely populated mountains and lush valleys make up for it if you bring your hiking boots as well as your bathing suit.
