Northwest Ireland
Northwest Ireland is the most rugged and wildly gorgeous part of the country. No matter where you're headed, a common denominator is the landscape--harsh and satisfyingly empty, dotted with tiny villages and quiet rural pubs. It's said that in this part of Ireland sheep outnumber people by roughly 100 to 1. Thankfully, sheep also outnumber tourists by a large margin. While this isn't as true of Sligo or Donegal Town, the region's largest villages, few tourist buses travel the jagged 280-mile coastline. It's not surprising, then, that the region presents some transportation challenges. McGeehan Coaches (tel. 075/46150) and Lough Swilly Buses (tel. 074/22400) cover routes ignored by the national bus company.
