Southwest Ireland
The southwest, which encompasses all of County Kerry and much of County Cork, is by far the most-touristed part of Ireland. Its principal attractions are Cork, Ireland's second-largest city, and Killarney, a market town that attracts an upscale breed of tourists--mostly retired Americans who happily pay £90 for "real" Irish sweaters. Killarney is still the best base for exploring the adjacent Ring of Kerry, a 110-mile coastal loop that encircles the rugged Iveragh Peninsula. Cyclists are the real winners in this part of Ireland: They not only avoid the tourist crunch, but can also get into the remotest stretches of the equally spectacular Dingle Peninsula, where rural pubs and traditional music soften the roughest of roads.
