Bologna and Emilia-Romagna

Stretching between the flat northern plains of the Padana, the foothills of the Apennines, and the Adriatic Coast, Emilia-Romagna, known as the heartland of Italy, has something for everyone. Composed of Emilia to the west and Romagna to the east, this is a wealthy, tranquil region where life slowly cruises by, and the residents still stop to smell the proverbial flowers. In the region of Emilia, the peacefulness of stately Renaissance towns, such as Parma and Piacenza, is interrupted only by the cosmopolitan decadence of one of central Italy's most beautiful cities: Bologna. East of Bologna lies the district of Romagna, the last Roman outpost in Italy. Here you'll find mosaic-filled Ravenna, and Rimini, a beachfront resort so vast that it's a civilization (of lack thereof) unto itself.
