Campania
More travelers visit Campania than any other region south of Rome, and it's no wonder. The region's balmy climate and vistas, bougainvillea-draped architecture, and mouth-watering cuisine continue to attract pleasure-seekers. Some of the oldest ruins this side of Constantinople are also here, like the famed archaeological sites of Herculaneum (Ercolano) and Pompeii--both with views of menacing Mt. Vesuvius. In between history lessons, you can flit from island to island in the Bay of Naples and lie beneath cliffs on the beaches of the Amalfi Coast (Costa Amalfitana). Then, of course, there's Naples, whose bad reputation keeps the tourist crowds away--all the better for those who are willing to discover its innumerable fascinations.
