Italy:
Lombardy
Despite the apparent drawbacks--the pollution, the high prices, and the somewhat unwelcoming population--the beauty of the Lombardy lakelands, the miles of wooded hiking trails, and the architecture of high-cultured Milan attract thousands of visitors. Be prepared to encounter the vacationing masses during the summer, when you may end up feeling as if you, too, are on a package tour. Worst of all, the influx of well-heeled tourists has driven prices up, making budget travel a real challenge. Though the residents may strike you as a bit snobbish, persist if you want to experience the refined pleasures of Italy's best-dressed region.
