Elsewhere In The Netherlands
Despite the small size and relatively flat terrain of the Netherlands, the countryside is quite diverse. The north has more than 25,000 acres of lakes and pastures filled with cows as far as the eye can see, and still features events such as a weekly cow market in Leeuwarden, and polsstokspringen (pole-vaulting over canals) competitions. Much of the center of the country is covered in forests; an important art museum is hidden deep in the 13,000 De Hoge Veluwe nature reserve (see Near Arnhem, below). The southern border provinces are a mix of windswept peninsulas, riverside industrial areas, and gentle hills covered with half-timbered farmhouses. The oldest city in the Netherlands, Maastricht, edges up to the Belgian border.
